Lone Star Quilts Book by Jan Krentz

Jan Krentz is an expert quiltmaker, designer, author, and teacher with a style that is truly unique. Jan’s talents shine in two (2) areas, specifically: Color selection and technical skill. Jan began quilting in 1973 and lives in California. Her enthusiasm is contagious!
Talk about taking Lone Star Quilts to a new level; Jan Krentz does it, and then some. Her work is superbly designed and crafted and the perspective that she shares in this book gives this type of quilt new dimension. Jan’s writing style allows almost every quilter that has average sewing and cutting skills to easily understand how to create this classic quilt, and the fact that she includes “extras” gives the quilts a fresh, new, updated look that makes them appear to be much more difficult to piece than they actually are.
     Included in this book are:

  • Six (6) colorful and beautiful projects,
  • Time-saving rotary cutting tips to speed the process,
  • Creative additions to the projects, such as: “Designer diamonds” (fussy cutting your fabric to get them) and spectacular appliqué patterns,
  • Everything you need to know about making Lone Star Quilts; from start to finish and also from the most simplistic, to fantastic quilts that are enough eye candy to last you for awhile,
  • A gallery of photographed, finished quilts made using the included project patterns. These photos should provide enough inspiration to get you going!
  •      If this article has sparked an interest in you, then this book would be a good investment. Bring Jan and her expertise into your home and allow her to guide you step-by-step through the projects. This book would even make a wonderful coffee table book!

Lone Star quilts are amazing. The colors and designs just jump out at you! I have an old one…in need of repair. But have always wanted to …maybe…make one myself!

    2. Valerie Says:

I own this book, though I haven’t yet made any of the quilts in it. From thumbing through the pages, the directions appear clearly written and there are lots of pictures to help the first-time lone star maker through the steps. Her tips on keeping your work accurate would translate over to any other project you’re working on as well.

    3. Terry Crawford Says:

I love this book and look through it often. I plan on making one of these types of quilts one day, although I’ll probably create my own applique pattern. She makes it sound so easy!

Thanks so much for the book review, Terry. I have seen Jan Krentz on tv and enjoyed seeing her work. I will be checking out the library to see if I can get this book. I like the idea of having a book review. There are so many out that it is difficult to know which are worthwhile. Maybe you could have a weekly or bi-weekly book review?

    5. Terry Crawford Says:

Hi, Judy! I do plan on a regular Book Review and they are slated for Mondays. Thursdays are going to be “Terry’s Thoughtful Thursday”. I am also considering a monthly or bi-monthly Web site review. Thinking about a couple of other things, too, but right now, these are the three things I’m doing for sure. I appreciate your input!

    6. Bert Says:

I am the librarian for my quilt guild. This is a popular book in our collection. We purchased her Hunter’s Star book based on the popularity of her Lone Star book. She makes some complex-looking projects very doable.

    7. Terry Crawford Says:

Bert, I’m not surprised! This book is such wonderful eye candy, even if I never make a single one of the patterns! I’ll have to check into the Hunter’s Star book; thanks for the head’s up about it!

    8. Jan Krentz Says:

Thank you, Valerie, for a fresh new review of Lone Star Quilts & Beyond! I continue to sew star quilts, and am working up some new designs!

I wish all of you a great adventure in your quilting - Jan Krentz

    9. Terry Crawford Says:

Thank you, Jan, for reviewing your review! I have pulled your book off the shelf many times, just to thumb through and thought it would be perfect for writing my first “Book Review” (which is going to be done on either a weekly or bi-weekly basis). I am in awe of your designs, from layout to color/fabric selections, to pattern… well, from A to Z! Keep up the great work and I’m looking forward to seeing your new designs!
