Quilting By Design

     The June 2007 Desktop Wallpaper Calendar is purple, blue, and green, in honor of the month of June. There are two (2) different versions of it; one with the seasonal graphics overlaying it and one without. It is available online, compliments of Quilting Passion.

     The blocks selected for this month’s calendar are called, “Bird With Tail Feathers” and “Nosegay Wreath“, both created using EQ5. This challenge, called the “Birds and Nosegay Challenge“, is born from this desktop wallpaper calendar! Make either one or both of the spotlighted patterns for this calendar, mail in the unfinished block(s) (please send a digital photo first, if possible), and it will give you an entry in the contest (one entry is given per block sent in). The winner wins all of the blocks submitted, unless there are more than 16. If more than 16 entries are received, then the blocks will be split so that 1st place receives 2/3 of the blocks. In the event that more than 30 blocks are received, then there will be three (3) winners selected. Blocks will be voted on anonymously via the Quilting Passion Forum.
     Please have your block submissions mailed in to me by June 27th. Voting will commence on or about the 29th and the winning results published the second week of July.
     Guidelines:

Please use good quality, 100% cotton fabric.

Please make sure that the unfinished block measures precisely 8.5″ x 8.5″.

Blocks can be embellished as you wish. Feel free to use trims, buttons, etc. in this block. Make sure that all embellishments can survive being washed, and if they can’t, make sure that they are easily removed (buttons, etc. can be attached with a small safety pin).

QP/QBD Hall of Fame

     How did you get started quilting? Did any one particular person influence you? Did any one book or magazine have an impact on your quilting?
     I am sure that there are many stories to be told as to how each of you got started in your quilting life! With that said, beginning in 2007, Quilting Passion begins hosting a yearly “Quilter’s Hall of Fame“, held in June. This year, it is being held in conjunction with Quilting By Design.
     Do you have a story to tell? If so, please leave your comment/story via the link below (Comments) from June 5th through the 11th. Each comment that is entered is considered to be a “nomination” and the submitter is the “nominator“. Quilting celebrities, books, magazines, Web sites, etc. that are credited as to influencing a nominator’s quilting life will be considered “nominees“. Once all of the comments are received, an anonymous vote will be taken (beginning around the 12th) on the Quilting Passion Forum as to the best comments and the top three (3) nominators with the highest votes will become the top winners. Additionally, the results from all of the comments will be tallied and the top nominees will also be published. Prizes (to be announced later) will be awarded to the (nominator) winners and the results published on June 26th.

Quilts benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation have surfed onto eBay in a vast sea of online auctioning as a result of an annual event called, “Quilt Pink“. The response to this event has been phenominal, resulting in over 4,000 gorgeous pink quilts made by quilters and/or quilt shops participating worldwide.

The first wave of handmade quilts are online right now, and up for grabs to the highest bidder. 100% of these Internet sales go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is non-profit, to aid in the research to find a cure for breast cancer.      The Quilt Pink Event was sponsored by the American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine®. The six-month eBay auctions began on Thursday, April 5th, 2007 and new quilts will be up for bid every Thursday until all are sold.      This truly amazing effort to end breast cancer has united men, women, and even children, together in a global battle against this terrible disease. Many individuals and organizations came together in spirit, determination, and talent to help support this fight. One such organization to leap head-first into this war against cancer was the Quilting Passion Forum, which compassionately donated nine (9) quilts made by volunteers of the forum’s RRCD (Round Robin Charity Drive) Project, which began in March of 2002.      This revolutionary, global charity project was the first ever of its kind to hit the Internet. The project provides a unique method of making handmade quilts of the finest quality with minimal effort, time, and expense for its wonderful volunteers. This on-the-leading-edge project was the prototype that set the standard for similar projects that have popped up on other forums.      The trend to make quilts for charities is positively impacting thousands of lives by giving a spark of hope and something to hang onto during the roughest of times for families suffering from tragedy.      Keep a close eye on this Web site for an article (complete with interviews from the Coordinator and her Assistant) highlighting the RRCD Project on the Quilting Passion Forum, with its multi-faceted simplicity, later this week!
