Documenting Your Quilts In A Journal!
Up until a few years ago, you never heard of documenting quilts, however, back in 1993 I realized that if I didn’t keep some sort of journal on all of my quilting/crafting projects, I would quickly lose track of them. The simple fact that the historical value of quilts is important is something that I didn’t want to lose out on.
With that thought in mind, I developed a rough draft of a journal and the pages in the journal I called “QuiltSheets(tm)”. These pages are free to the public, as long as my copyright is kept intact. As far as I know, these were the earliest pioneer journal sheets for documenting quilts.
If you would like a copy of the QuiltSheets, please e-mail me with QUILTSHEETS in the subject area. Once you receive the QuiltSheets, please come back here and let me know what you think!

I bought one of these journals and I really like it a lot. There are so many options on what to record, so many more than I had ever thought of. It’s great!

Thanks! I not only keep the quilts I’ve made in it, I’ve also recorded as much information as I know for all of the quilts my mother and grandmother have given me. Every once in awhile, I go back to my earliest journals and it surprises me at the ones I’ve made and already forgotten about!

Terry, I just came to visit your site. I always try and label my quilts but most of the time I just am plain too lazy or the rush is on to get them to their destination. I am going to try and keep a diary from this day forward. Thanks for the reminder of how important it really is.

Mary Pat, I, too, have been guilty of neglecting to document my quilts. Early on, I’d rush through and think to myself that I’d do it later… only it never happened. I didn’t realize how many I was missing until people began thanking me years later for a specific quilt (that I had totally forgotten about). I try to be faithful in documenting in my journal now, plus, also in labeling quilt (another topic of discussion!). I even document quilts that I only do part of the work on, such as charity quilts where several people work on each one.

I have pictures and comments for all quilts…but your journal is even larger with more details!

Once I decided to become a serious quilter, I realized I had let dozens of my first projects leave my home with nothing but a picture, and sometimes not even that.
The thing is, I need to get in the habit of doing better documentation. I’m always so anxious to move on to the next project, alas.

I try to remember to label my quilts and journal but sometimes I am so excited that a quilt is finished and ready for giving I forget. I think this journal might just be the thing I need to organize my quilting.

Good, Deb! I hope so, also.
I know exactly how you feel when you speak of finishing a quilt and giving it away. As soon as that’s done, I’m off to my next project, so I’ve been forcing myself to document my journal when I take the picture of the quilt. It really only takes a few minutes to do it; it’s just DOING it. LOL
